Sportswomen, adopt Spirulina Iron

Sportswomen, adopt Spirulina Iron

Sunday June 23 sees the 4th Arly Cîmes Trail. On this occasion, the Fémini Trail Duo puts the spotlight on women over a 13km course with 650m of positive ascent. Algorigin will be offering sportswomen Spiruline FER, a natural health solution to iron deficiency.

IRON DEFICIENCY IN WOMEN ATHLETES

Practising a high-impact sport like trail running can lead to greater use and loss of iron. The loss of this essential mineral can ultimately lead to anaemia. This is all the more true for women, who also have increased iron requirements, mainly due to losses associated with menstruation.

IRON LOSS DUE TO SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Sport not only leads to the direct destruction of red blood cells through repeated impacts, but also to micro-lesions responsible for bleeding. Even if these generally go unnoticed, they deplete circulating iron stocks. As most iron is stored in the blood, stocks are directly impacted.

On the other hand, when exercise nutrition is not optimized, there is a risk of ischemia-reperfusion syndrome in the intestines.
During exercise, blood is mainly present in the muscles to cover oxygenation needs. Ischemia-reperfusion occurs when this "muscular" blood returns to the intestines to ensure digestion. This results in the appearance of lesions in the digestive tract, which can also lead to bleeding.

IRON LOSS DUE TO MENSTRUATION

Menstruation-induced iron losses correspond to around 30 to 70mg of iron per month. On average, women lose twice as much iron as men every day.

Intakes should therefore be increased accordingly, to 15mg / day for women. They are calculated according to the percentage of absorption of different iron sources (animal or vegetable) and are sufficient to cover requirements.

CONSEQUENCES OF IRON DEFICIENCY OR ANEMIA

Iron deficiency, or anaemia, can lead to shortness of breath, paleness, increased fatigue or even dizziness. In sportsmen and women, reduced tissue oxygenation can also lead to reduced sporting performance.

A NEW SOLUTION FOR SPORTSWOMEN: SPIRULINA IRON

TheWHO, in 2016, highlights that "Daily iron supplementation of regulated women increases hemoglobin levels and martial reserves and reduces the risk of anemia and iron deficiency. In addition, iron supplementation improves exercise performance [...] and may improve fatigue.".

Algorigin Spirulina FER, the iron-enriched spirulina, provides optimal iron intake (93% of recommended daily intake) without the digestive side effects often associated with traditional iron salt supplements (constipation, nausea, vomiting). Its absorption in the body is equivalent to that of animal iron, and there is no risk of increased oxidation. It is therefore an interesting source of vegetable iron.
