Maca (Lepidium meyenii), also known as Peruvian ginseng, is a root from the crucifer family that grows at 3,500 to 4,500 m on the high plateaus of the Andes, in the Junín region of Peru. Cultivated for more than 2,000 years, it was eaten by the Incas as a strength food and given to warriors. Its richness in amino acids, minerals and specific compounds (macamides, glucosinolates) has earned it a worldwide reputation as an adaptogenic plant: it helps the body adapt to periods of fatigue and strain.

There are three varieties: yellow maca (the most common, general vitality), red maca and black maca (traditionally associated with male vitality). Our formula uses organic maca, dried and ground into powder, combined with 50% organic spirulina to complement the root with iron and protein. For a high iron intake, try our Organic Spirulina Iron

Maca has no authorised health claim in Switzerland or Europe: its benefits are a matter of traditional use and ongoing research. The recognised benefits of the formula are based on the iron in the spirulina:

Energy and tiredness

Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal energy-yielding metabolism. This is the number one use of Spirulina Maca: everyday vitality, during periods of overwork or changes of season.

Maca and sport

Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body and to normal formation of red blood cells. Maca is traditionally used by Andean athletes for endurance. See the Sport Pack.

Maca and libido

Maca is traditionally the plant of libido, for men and women alike. Several clinical trials have studied its effect on sexual desire, independently of hormones. No authorised claim: we are talking about traditional use.

Maca benefits for men

Vitality, sport, fertility: maca (especially black maca) is traditionally associated with male fertility. The authorised claim “normal fertility and reproduction” is carried by zinc: see Spirulina Zinc.

Maca benefits for women

Balance, energy, libido, comfort during the menopause: maca is traditionally used at every stage of a woman's hormonal life. It is part of our Menopause Pack. Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Cognitive function

Iron contributes to normal cognitive function.

Athletes of all levels

To support training and recovery: iron for oxygen, plant protein, maca for vitality.

People feeling tired or overworked

Spirulina Maca is great

For me, it's one of the few “vitality” supplements that actually delivers. I've never tried maca on its own, but the spirulina + maca combination really suits me. If you're feeling flat, you should definitely give it a try.

Origin and purity

Our Spirulina Maca is made by combining maca root powder with spirulina when the tablets are formed: two raw ingredients from the Andes brought together in a single tablet. The maca comes from the Peruvian highlands, where it is grown using traditional methods and then sun-dried.

The spirulina is grown at an altitude of 2,500 metres in the heart of the Andes in Ecuador, and dried at low temperature, which preserves its active compounds and neutral taste. Every batch is laboratory-tested (nutrient content, heavy metals, microbiology); packaged in Switzerland.
