What is chlorella?
Chlorella is a freshwater alga packed with nutrients. It is a close cousin of spirulina, which comes from salt water. Researchers first studied chlorella after the Second World War as a potential source of protein for a growing world population. It contains higher levels of vitamins and minerals than spirulina.
Our organic chlorella tablets provide 77% of the daily reference intake of active vitamin B12.
However, it has never been produced on that scale, due to manufacturing problems and the greater efficiency of other crops. Scientists are nevertheless continuing to research its potential as a health-promoting “superfood”. Chlorella is available as a powder, capsules or a dark green extract in many health food shops. You can take it as a supplement or add it to smoothies, juices and many sweet or savoury recipes.

What are the health benefits of chlorella?
Organic Chlorella is packed with nutrients. Depending on its source, it generally contains 60% complete protein, with all nine essential amino acids. This makes it an excellent option for people on a plant-based diet or anyone who needs extra protein.
Chlorella may also offer health benefits, including:
Immune system support
The antioxidants and other nutrients in chlorella have shown antibacterial, antiviral and anti-tumour properties. In clinical studies, chlorella increased white blood cell counts, which may stimulate your immune system and help you fight infections. Chlorella has been shown to strengthen your immune system in several ways, whether by increasing the number of immune cells or the production of powerful immune chemicals such as interferon.
A strong ally for your brain
Your brain needs vitamin B12 and iron to stay in good condition and remain healthy. Chlorella provides your body with the only form of this vitamin that it can use. In fact, vegans should take note – it is one of the few plant sources on the planet of this active form of B12. Clinical research has also shown that chlorella helps older people strengthen and exercise their memory.
An energy boost
At 64, Janet tires easily because she looks after a child with special needs. But chlorella has made things easier for her. After taking chlorella regularly for 9 months, Janet reports that she sleeps better, and “I keep going like the Energizer Bunny!” How does chlorella boost your energy? By helping your body regenerate quickly and giving you the nutrients you need, so that your body can perform at its best. The result? You feel on top form!

Beautiful, radiant skin
Constantly exposed to the elements, your skin has to keep replacing its cells and renewing itself. Chlorella’s unique growth factor (CGF) plays an important role in cell division. You can nourish your skin by taking chlorella as a supplement or by applying it directly in an anti-ageing skin cream.
For a healthy pregnancy
Chlorella is not only safe for pregnant women, it is also beneficial!
Stabilises blood sugar
If you are concerned about keeping your blood sugar within a healthy range, chlorella may give you some peace of mind. A recent clinical study showed that chlorella not only maintains healthy sugar metabolism in the body, but does so at the genetic level!
What are the potential risks of chlorella?
As a food supplement, chlorella is not closely regulated by bodies such as the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). As a result, nutritional content can vary between the products on sale. Be sure to choose a reliable brand and consult your doctor before adding chlorella to your diet. It is considered safe for most people, but chlorella can pose some health risks, including:
Stomach problems
Chlorella can cause nausea, wind or diarrhoea in some people. Consult your doctor before taking it and introduce it into your diet gradually.
Allergies
Some people are allergic to algae such as spirulina and chlorella. Although rare, this can lead to breathing problems or anaphylaxis.
Pregnancy concerns
There is not enough research to confirm whether chlorella is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. However, one study concluded that it should not cause significant problems for mothers and their children.
Drug interactions
Because chlorella can stimulate the immune system, it may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs. Because of its high vitamin K content, a nutrient that promotes blood clotting, chlorella may also interact with anticoagulants.
